Fawn: A New Wine and Amaro Bar from Chef Terry Koval
If you love wine and amaro, you’ll be excited to hear that chef Terry Koval, the James Beard award-winning owner of the Deer and the Dove and B-Side, is opening a new wine and amaro bar in Decatur next spring. The bar, called Fawn, will be located next to Cafe Alsace in downtown Decatur, and will feature wines from volcanic regions and amari from various countries.
Fawn will have a cozy, moody, and low-lit atmosphere, inspired by the wine bars of Italy and Spain. The bar will have a European-style open kitchen, where Koval will prepare six dishes and possibly a tasting menu, using local ingredients and house-made charcuterie, cheeses, breads, and pitas. The food will pair well with the wines and amari, which will be curated by beverage director Matt Watkins.
Fawn is the result of Koval’s passion for wine and amaro, which he developed while running B-Side as a bakery-cafe by day and a wine bar by night. B-Side’s nighttime service was shut down by the pandemic, but Koval always wanted to bring it back. When he saw an opportunity to open a new space in Decatur, he jumped on it.
Koval says he loves Decatur and its community, and he wants to contribute to its food scene. He also says that winning the James Beard award earlier this year was a huge boost for his business and his confidence. He hopes that Fawn will be another success story for him and his team.
Fawn is expected to open in spring 2024 at 119 East Ponce de Leon Avenue in Decatur. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting new wine and amaro bar.
