Preserving Red’s Farm: A New Greenspace in Ormewood Park
City officials in Atlanta have taken a significant step towards preserving a versatile greenspace near the Atlanta BeltLine loop, known as "Red’s Farm." During a recent meeting, the Atlanta City Council unanimously voted to purchase a 5.3-acre property in Ormewood Park, establishing the first large city park in this historic eastside neighborhood.
The property, also called Farmer Red’s Preserve and Urban Farm Ormewood, is located between Berne Street and Ormewood Avenue, close to the BeltLine’s Southside Trail. The Conservation Fund, a nonprofit organization, sold the property to the city for $2.7 million. This greenspace has been a cherished community hub, hosting events like an annual Easter egg hunt and activities such as dog walking and blueberry picking.
District 1 councilmember Jason Winston led the efforts to preserve this space, working with the family of the late owner, Brian Charles “Red” Harrison. Harrison, a beloved neighborhood personality who supported local farmers, passed away in 2022. The preservation of Red’s Farm serves as a touching memorial to his vision of keeping urban agriculture alive in the city.
