Atlanta Civic Center to be Revived as a Mixed-Use Destination
The Atlanta Civic Center, a historic landmark that has been vacant since 2014, is finally getting a makeover. A development team led by Atlanta Housing has signed a deal to redevelop the site into a vibrant mixed-use destination.
The centerpiece of the project, the PAC will be renovated to host a variety of arts and cultural events, honoring the legacy of the Civic Center and the former Buttermilk Bottom neighborhood.
The project will offer 1,311 units of housing, with more than one-third being affordable for low- and moderate-income households. The housing will be a mix of rental and for-sale units, with rooftop gardens and open spaces.
The project will also feature a grocery store, a school, a hotel, and other commercial and educational uses, creating a dynamic and inclusive community. The project will also reconnect the street grid and improve pedestrian and bike connectivity.
The project will be built with high environmental standards and will leverage Atlanta Housing’s HomeFlex subsidies to provide affordable housing options. The project will also generate revenue for Atlanta Housing through a 99-year ground lease.
The redevelopment of the Atlanta Civic Center is expected to take a decade to complete and will cost about $575 million. The project is seen as a transformative step forward for the Old Fourth Ward and downtown Atlanta.
